Do I need to log in or give my Instagram password?

No, and you should not. Never type your Instagram password into a third-party site, including this one. This tool only reads content that is already public, so there is nothing to log into.
Will the person know I viewed their story?

Your account is not used to open the story, so your username does not show up in the "Seen by" list for that story.
Does it work with private accounts?

No. Private stories are only visible to followers the owner has approved. Any site promising to open private profiles is either lying or trying to collect your login details.
What do I actually get when I download?

Videos come as MP4 files and photos as JPG, in the resolution Instagram serves them. Nothing is added to the file.
Is any of this legal?

Looking at content someone posted publicly is fine. Reposting it as your own is not — the person who made it still owns the copyright, so ask before you republish anything.

What is the difference between a story and a highlight?

A story removes itself 24 hours after it is posted. A highlight is a story the owner chose to keep, pinned under their bio, and it stays there until they delete it. Both open here.
Why does it sometimes say there are no stories?

Usually the account has not posted in the last 24 hours, the profile was switched to private, or the username was changed or deleted. Highlights can still load even when the current story list is empty.
Is there a limit on how many profiles I can look up?

Not for normal use. Requests are rate limited on the server so bulk scraping cannot slow the site down for everyone else, but ordinary browsing never gets close to that.
Is there an app I can install?

No. The site is deliberately browser-only, which means no permissions to grant, no storage used on your phone, and the same features on every device.
What do you keep about me?

Only the basic request logs a server needs in order to run and to block abuse. They are not tied to an identity and are not sold or shared. The privacy policy has the details.
Does taking a screenshot notify anyone?

For a normal story, no — Instagram stopped sending screenshot alerts for those. Disappearing photos and videos sent inside a DM are the exception, and those are outside what this tool touches.
