What IGStories is
IGStories is a free browser-based tool for viewing and downloading publicly posted Instagram content — Stories, Highlights, Reels, videos and photos. It requires no account, no login, and no installation. It works only with accounts that have chosen to be public.
How it works, technically
When an Instagram account is set to public, its media is served to any visitor, including one who is not logged in. That is what "public" means on the platform. IGStories makes exactly that unauthenticated request from its own server, reads the media URLs out of the response, and presents them to the user.
Two consequences follow from that design, and both are frequently misunderstood in coverage of this category:
- Viewing is anonymous because no account is involved. Instagram builds a Story's viewer list from authenticated sessions. A server-side request carries no session, so there is no identity to record — not the visitor's, and not one belonging to IGStories.
- Private accounts are genuinely inaccessible. Instagram evaluates follower approval before generating any media URL. An unauthenticated request for private content returns an error, not an encrypted file. No tool in this category can reach private Stories, and any product claiming to is misrepresenting what it does.
What we do not do
- We never ask for Instagram credentials, and there is no login flow anywhere on the site.
- We do not store the media that passes through the service.
- We do not publish a public feed of recent searches, a practice some tools in this space still use.
- We do not claim access to private accounts, and we publish an explanation of why that access is impossible.

Anonymous viewing tools are a predictable response to a product decision. Instagram chose to attach identity to Story viewing and gave users no way to opt out of that within the app. Tools like this exist in the gap that decision created.
The real harm in this category is not anonymous viewing of public content. It is the sites that promise private-account access, because the only way to make that promise pay is to take something from the user — a password, a survey completion, or an app install.
