Yesterday their Story ring was there. Today it is gone, or their Stories stopped appearing in your tray entirely. There are five explanations, they look almost identical from your side, and this is how to narrow it down without asking.
The five possibilities
- The Story expired. 24 hours passed. Boring, and by far the most common answer.
- They hid their Story from you specifically. Instagram lets anyone exclude individual followers from their Stories, silently.
- You were blocked. Their whole profile becomes invisible to you, not just Stories.
- They posted to Close Friends. You are not on the list, so there is nothing to see.
- They deactivated or were suspended. The account is gone temporarily or permanently.
The diagnostic table
Check these from your logged-in account and match the pattern:

How to actually run the test
Step 1: Can you see their profile at all?
Search their handle from your account. If the profile does not appear, or appears with no posts and "User not found", you are looking at a block or a deleted account. If the profile loads normally with posts intact, blocking is ruled out — blocks are all-or-nothing, they do not hide only Stories.
Step 2: Check from a logged-out browser
Open their profile in a private browsing window, or use our anonymous Story viewer. This is the most informative single step, because it removes your account from the equation entirely.
- Stories appear logged out but not for you: they hid their Story from you specifically, or blocked you. Combine with step 1 — profile loads for you means hidden, profile gone means blocked.
- No Stories logged out either: it expired, or it went to Close Friends. Both are invisible to the public.
- Profile does not exist logged out: the account is private (check for the lock), deactivated, or deleted.
Step 3: Timing
If you saw the Story yesterday and it is gone today, it expired. This is genuinely the answer most of the time and people skip past it because it is unsatisfying. Stories last 24 hours from posting, not from when you first saw them.
Telling "hidden" apart from "blocked"
This is the distinction people actually care about, and the profile test settles it. Blocking removes everything — profile, posts, follower count, your old comments on their posts, and any DM history from search. Hiding your Story affects only Stories; the profile stays completely normal.
So: profile fine, Stories gone = hidden from you. Profile inaccessible = blocked or account deleted. To separate those last two, check whether a mutual friend can still see the profile. If they can and you cannot, you are blocked. If nobody can, the account is gone.
Close Friends: the green ring
Instagram's Close Friends list is a private subset of followers. Stories posted to it show a green ring instead of the usual gradient, and only listed people see them at all.
You are never told when you are added or removed. If someone's Stories became sporadic rather than absent — some days you see them, some days you do not — they may be posting most content to Close Friends and occasionally posting publicly. That pattern is characteristic and hard to distinguish from anything else.
Things that are not the explanation
A few myths that waste people's time:
- "They muted me." Muting is one-directional and only affects what they see. It has no effect on your view of them.
- "The algorithm buried it." Story tray order is algorithmic, but that changes position, not existence. Scroll all the way right — accounts you interact with less get pushed to the end and are easy to miss.
- "Restricted accounts cannot see Stories." Restriction affects comments and message delivery, not Story visibility.
- "An app can tell me who blocked me." No API exposes that. Any app claiming to detect blocks is guessing from the same signals you can check yourself.
If the answer is "hidden" or "blocked"
Worth saying plainly: both are deliberate choices by the other person, and both are their prerogative. Repeatedly working around either — new accounts, borrowed logins, asking mutuals to screenshot — turns an ordinary boundary into something else. If the relationship matters, a direct conversation is the only route that actually goes anywhere.
If it is a public account and you simply want to keep up with what they post publicly, the anonymous viewer shows whatever is genuinely public without your account being involved. It will not reveal anything hidden from you specifically, because hidden means excluded at the source.
Summary
Start with the logged-out check — it separates "gone for everyone" from "gone for you" in about ten seconds. Then use the profile test to split hidden from blocked. And accept that expiry is the answer far more often than any of the more dramatic possibilities.
